The old scanners worked fine with a amplified speaker plugged in the headphone jack. A small separate rechargeable coin like battery that was just to keep the clock going. Normally, they should last a least a few weeks to a few months if the main battery is dead. If the main battery is dead I've had mine work fine 6mo+ later. Your battery could just have lost it's charge most likely. The Sentinel update to 2.03 went fine and now has the new tuning steps for custom searches, but I don't have any need for them. I ran the SDS100 alongside the IC R30 for three hours yesterday in my office. The IC-R30 far outperformed the SDS100 and rarely stopped, opened squelch without good clear voice traffic. Wondering what others have their backlight settings set for, as I'm having a minor issue with my new SDS100: Short transmissions will often fail to illuminate the backlight, or cause it to flicker for a split-second & then go out while the transmission continues.
